Special Needs Passengers

Please notify our call center at least 24 hours prior to your departure time to advise us of any special needs you may have, such as requiring the use of assistive devices (wheelchairs, portable oxygen concentrators, service animals, etc.), or assistance boarding the aircraft.

Safety Assistant

The primary role of the personal safety assistant is to assist a disabled customer exiting the aircraft in case of an emergency evacuation or to establish communication for the required safety briefing.

A safety assistant could be a relative, passenger volunteers, or hired private attendant. They must be at least 15 years old, self-reliant, mentally able, and physically fit to provide the passenger with all the assistance required, including assisting the passenger in the event of an emergency.

DAC may require, at its sole discretion, pursuant to 14 CFR § 382.29, that a Qualified Individual with a Disability be accompanied by a safety assistant as a condition of being provided air transportation in the following circumstances:

      • When the Customer is unable to comprehend or respond appropriately to safety instructions from DAC, including the safety briefing required by 14 CFR §§ 121.571(a)(3) and (a)(4) because of a mental disability.
      • When the Customer has a mobility impairment so severe that the Customer is unable to physically assist in his or her own emergency evacuation of the aircraft; or
      • When the Customer has both severe hearing and severe vision impairments that prevent the Customer from establishing a means of communication with DAC to permit transmission of the safety briefing required by 14 CFR §§ 121.571 (a)(3) and (a)(4).

If DAC determines, in its sole discretion, that an individual meeting the criteria above must travel with a safety assistant and the individual disagrees and believes he/she can travel independently, DAC will not charge the individual for carriage of a safety assistant. If a seat is not available for the safety assistant and the individual with a disability is unable to travel on the flight, the individual will be eligible for denied boarding compensation under 14 CFR Part 250 of the DOT regulations, to the extent Part 250 applies. For purposes of determining whether a seat is available, the safety assistant shall be deemed to have checked in at the same time as the individual with the disability.

Denver Air Connection does not have provisions for the carriage of passengers in incubators, on stretchers, or needing medical oxygen during the course of a flight. Transportation may be denied if passengers cannot be properly secured in a passenger seat, or it is determined that an individual’s health may be endangered due to unavailability of special services not required by law.
